The Heart versus The Mind

There are times in our lives where we are in a complete dilemma, and this dilemma is within ourselves. There are two possible answers, two solutions to the problem, but the bigger problem always is not knowing which one to choose, not knowing which path to take. These answers are the voice of the mind and the voice of the heart. The heart and the mind are like two sides of a coin, they both remain together but never support the other. The heart says one thing, the mind another and they both never complement rather they conflict.

Usually, what the mind says is the rationale we have formed on the basis of our experiences, our studies and most importantly, others’ experiences. It is our thoughts with the influence of others. It is adulterated, adulterated by thoughts. The mind is the voice of reason, it plans ahead. It thinks about the future, the consequences, it persuades us to play safe. It analyses all the decisions and after doing a reality check, presents to us the best decision available in the circumstances. It doesn’t tell us what we really want to do, instead it supports the safest bet. The mind talks reason and is guided by logic. But we forget that sometimes we don’t want logical answers, sometimes we don’t want to save ourselves the trouble, sometimes we don’t want the best, we just have to do what we really want to.

The heart, on the other hand, is pure and unadulterated with foreign thoughts. It is an innocent kid. It tells us what we really want, it doesn’t think of the consequences that may befall rather it stays in the present. It doesn’t present us the safest bet, but the most satisfying. It is a guide to our happiness, something we are always in pursuit of. It is the inner voice, our conscience speaking to us through this medium. It is often influenced by emotions, feelings but it, in most cases, takes us to our happiness. Even if it doesn’t, we don’t blame it, we are content with it. Because, at the end of the day, we know that we have listened to our voice, the serene voice talking from deep within and we know, it would lead us somewhere, somewhere closer to eternal peace.

Life is not a bed of roses, instead it is a path full of thorns, a path difficult to tread upon but which, eventually, leads to a beautiful rose. We all are like an infant with the toy. We want it so bad that whenever someone tries to snatch it from us, we keep grabbing it. But, in the end, we forget that it is just a toy, why do we even want it? We can’t design life, plan out every moment, every single detail, it just doesn’t work that way. We have to just live it and let it design all by itself. Sometimes, we just have to ignore logic and listen to what our voice is telling us to do. Sometimes, we just have to take that leap.
